Many people are intimidated by the thought of beginning a regular regimen of meditation. I've met very few "naturals" when it comes to this. It takes regular practice for everyone to be successful at it.
Consistency is the most important factor to success with meditation. Doing it ad hoc is not going to develop the sense of inner connection that you are seeking. It's like weight-lifting... at first you struggle to lift even the slightest weight, but with regular repetitions of low weights, you build up strength and endurance to lift the heavier weights.
There are so many different ways to meditate that everyone can find a method that they feel comfortable with. Meditation does not have to mean sitting in the Lotus position while chanting a foreign mantra. Meditation runs the full range of silent, motionless meditation to moving, noisy meditation. You need to experiment and find which method works best for you.
Hopefully you will master more than one method. It's the best spiritual investment that anyone can ever make. It's how you find your own inner truth and higher purpose. What could be more important than that?
