Just as the moon has energies that demonstrate a powerful effect on earth, the sun has an even more powerful effect. Without the energy of the sun, life on earth would not exist. We rely on the sun like an infant relies on the parent. It is essential to our very survival.
Therefore, the energies of the sun are often personified as the God in Wicca. The sun, as it waxes and wanes in its yearly cycle, is represented by the life, death, and rebirth of God. (Different traditions of Wicca have different myths about the role of the Sun in relation to the Moon, however.) The eight major Sabbats are based on the solar solstices and equinoxes, and their cross-quarter points on the Wheel of the Year.
There is a deep reverence and honoring of the sun, rather than worship in the traditional sense. The Sun, Moon, and Earth all weave an intricate dance in fulfilling the abundance of Life.
