Gods & Goddesses

I’m a reader by nature, and so have explored and enjoyed so many excellent books in my life.  Way too many to list, but here is at least a brief list of books that I’d personally endorse.  The Recommended Reading List is divided into several categories to make titles easier to find.  The links immediately below will lead you directly to that page of the list.

  • Mythology by Edith Hamilton.
This is a classic text on the myths, gods and goddesses of the Greeks and Romans. Good, solid, well-researched, reliable information from a reputable scholar.

Goddesses in Every Woman by Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D.
Takes a psychological approach to exploring divinity within. Explores seven archetypal goddesses in depth, but also includes a brief appendix of gods and goddesses (mainly Greek pantheon).

The Witches' God by Janet & Stewart Farrar
offers a comprehensive view of the many aspects of God across cultures and throughout history. It includes a close look at 12 individual gods, with a comprehensive directory of over 1000 gods from many world cultures, past and present. It is the companion volume to the book The Witches' Goddess by the same authors, but I don't have that book, so I can only infer its value from the Witches' God.

The White Goddess by Robert Graves
helped inspire the current revival of Goddess worship.  Written as a result of personal epiphany and revelation, it should not be depended on for historical accuracy, but for its value and contribution in understanding and expressing the power and beauty of the feminine face of Divine.
