| I was startled to notice two garter snakes nesting in a shrub near the Firepit. They were balled together in the branches, about five feet off the ground. I had never heard of garter snakes climbing into the bushes before, so was quite to surprised to see them in this way. As I was taking a few photos, I noticed three more garter snakes nesting in another shrub a few feet away. I had never seen garter snakes exhibit this tree-climbing tendency before, so it was quite an unexpected sight. They stayed in the shrubs well into the night as our Samhain celebration wound down, but they were gone by dawn the next day. If any herpetologists out there want to explain this behavior, I'm all ears.
