Creating Ritual
   How to Construct a Ritual

* Decide on the purpose of the ritual.
(What do you want to do and why)

* Think of ways you’d like to accomplish the goal of the ritual.

* Break the ritual up into elements or sections.
(Such as casting the Circle, invoking God/dess, smudging or censing, dedications, consecrations, raising energy, calling “Watchtowers” or “Quarters”, closing the Circle, cakes & ale, etc.)

* Put each element into the order or sequence that they will be performed.
(See sample that follows.)

* Write it down in an outline.
(Or script it out in advance if you prefer a more formalized structure.)>/DD>
* Read it through and see if it makes sense.
(A point often overlooked!)

* Rearrange as necessary.

* Go over the outline with the group,
and make sure everyone understands each of the elements.

* Now go and do it.

* Talk about it after and decide what worked and what didn’t,
and see if you can figure out why each occurred. (Knowing why something worked is just as important as knowing why something didn’t work.)

A Sample Outline for Group Ritual:

* Cast Circle

* Call Quarters

* Invoke Deity

* Explanation of Rite
(Where I do a spiel about why we are gathered in this sacred space: it focuses the group mind on the goal of the ritual)

* Raise energy

* Send energy and ground.
(One step. Ground immediately. Don’t wait and forget this step. It’s a good habit to get into.)

* Unwind with cakes & ale.
(This is a good time to discuss the ritual since it has just happened. After all, you are still in Sacred Space, cheek-to-cheek with the spirit world. You might get inspired!)

* Dismiss the quarters

* Open the Circle
